Standard (Monofocal) Intraocular Lens

Cataract surgery is a straightforward, outpatient procedure that removes the clouded natural lens in your eye and replaces it with an artificial lens implant called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Besides deciding that it's time to have surgery, it is equally important to choose the type of IOL you will use to replace the natural crystalline lens in your eyes.  Presbyopia is a common age-related condition.  Beginning around the age of 40, the natural lens inside the eye begins to harden and becomes less flexible.  This reduces the eye's ability to switch focus from near, far, in-between and back again, resulting in vision loss and, in most cases, the need for reading glasses or bifocals.

IOLs are very small, highly advanced medial devices designed to mimic the function of your eye's natural lens.  Each IOL design offers its own features and benefits.  Today, virtually all IOLs are classified as either a monofocal or multifocal design.

A monofocal lens has only one focus region.  It allows you to see objects far away, but you will continue to need glasses for reading and other up-close activities.  Depending on your prescription, if you have astigmatism, you may also need glasses for the distance.  (See TORIC IOLs - Premium Lenses)

Cost-wise, virtually all monofocal IOLs are categorized as a "standard" lens and are normally covered by insurance.  It is recommended that you contact your insurance provider to determine what will be your out of pocket responsibilities.

Some IOLs are better suited to specific eye problems, activities, lifestyle priorities, and cost considerations.  Discussing your own specific vision needs and expectations with your doctor will help to ensure that the type of IOL, you ultimately choose is the ideal fit for a lifetime.
